United for Medical Research: Keeping Federal Funding for NIH Strong

Challenge

HudsonLake provides strategic communications for United for Medical Research (UMR), a non-profit coalition of academic research institutions, patient groups and members of the life sciences industry that advocates for increased funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In a legislative environment where everything is “urgent,” UMR’s challenge is to make increased annual appropriations for the NIH an urgent national priority.

Outcome

HudsonLake uses a variety of tools to creatively and compellingly tell the story of the value of the nation’s investment in medical research through the NIH. Activities include podcast interviews with researchers describing amazing discoveries and medical innovations, digital “baseball cards” of people whose jobs exist because of NIH research, infographics highlighting medical, social and economic impacts of NIH research, videos and written vignettes highlighting patients who benefit from research, and economic impact reports. Using social media, advertising and direct outreach, these tools are delivered to legislators, congressional staff and NIH stakeholders to build champions for continued and increased investment. In 2019, NIH will receive the fourth consecutive budget increase after more than a decade of stagnant funding.
